The Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission has announced plans to roll out three new social consumption license types in mid-2025, marking a significant milestone for the cannabis and hospitality industries. These licenses aim to create unique spaces for cannabis use while fostering community engagement and supporting business growth.
The Three License Types:
Co-located Social Consumption Lounge: Allows existing cannabis businesses to create on-site consumption spaces, similar to tasting rooms.
Standalone Social Consumption Business: Enables new or existing non-cannabis businesses like cafes, theaters, or yoga studios to host on-site cannabis consumption.
Event Organizer License: Permits cannabis consumption at temporary events such as festivals.
The commission has outlined general regulations for all licensees:
Entry is restricted to individuals 21 and older.
Customers are prohibited from bringing their own cannabis products.
Sales must stop 30 minutes before closing.
Proper ventilation systems are mandatory.
Licensees must provide a transportation plan for safely assisting impaired consumers.
Information on THC levels and average onset times must be clearly displayed.
Timeline:
Draft regulations: December 9, 2024
Public comment period: December 17, 2024 – January 17, 2025
Final regulations: Expected by mid-2025
